How Marketplace Fees Work

Most e-commerce platforms charge two types of fees per sale: a commission (percentage of the sale price) and a payment processing fee. Commission rates vary by platform and seller tier — standard sellers typically pay around 2%, while premium or mall-level sellers may pay 5% or more. Payment processing adds another 2% or so. On a $15 item, that's roughly $0.60 gone before you even count the product cost and shipping.

How to Improve Your Margins

The obvious levers are lowering your product cost or raising your price, but both have limits. Smarter moves include: taking advantage of platform shipping subsidies, increasing your average order value through bundle deals, and reducing your return rate with accurate product photos and descriptions. Small improvements in each area compound into meaningful margin gains.

When Higher Fees Are Worth It

Premium seller tiers or marketplace "mall" programs charge higher commissions but give you more visibility and buyer trust. If your product has healthy margins and you can handle the volume, the extra exposure often more than pays for the higher fee. Use this calculator to compare — plug in your numbers at 2% vs 5% and see if the math still works.
