Lorem Ipsum has been the printing industry's go-to placeholder text for over 500 years. When you're building a UI mockup, wireframe, or prototype, you need text that looks like real content without distracting readers with actual meaning. Lorem Ipsum looks like natural Latin prose, so it fills layouts convincingly without pulling attention away from the design.
Because people can't help reading words they understand. The designer wants you to evaluate the layout, typography, spacing, and whitespace — but the client spends the entire review meeting debating the copy instead. Lorem Ipsum sidesteps this entirely. Everyone's attention stays on the visual design. Once the layout is approved, the real copy goes in.
If you're designing a CJK interface, use a Chinese or Japanese placeholder generator — character width, line-breaking rules, and spacing behave differently from Latin text. Tired of the classics? The internet has fun alternatives: Hipster Ipsum for artisanal vibes, Bacon Ipsum for meat lovers, Cupcake Ipsum for dessert vocabulary. They're entertaining, but stick with standard Lorem Ipsum for client-facing presentations — you don't want to explain why the wireframe is full of bacon references.
Depends on what you're filling. A hero section usually needs just one paragraph (2-3 sentences). A blog post template works well with 3-5 paragraphs to show how long-form content flows. Product pages with mixed text and images might call for several short paragraphs. The key is matching the placeholder length to the expected real content — if the final copy will be 500 words, don't test the layout with 50.
