How to Calculate Conversion Rates

A conversion rate is simply "people who did the next thing divided by people who did the previous thing." If 10,000 people saw your listing and 500 clicked, your CTR is 5%. If 100 of those added to cart, your add-to-cart rate is 20%. If 20 placed an order, your checkout rate is 20%. Each layer of the funnel loses people — your job is to minimize the leaks.

Optimizing Each Funnel Stage

Low CTR? Your main image or title isn't grabbing attention. Try a more eye-catching hero image, add specific numbers or urgency to your title, and make sure your price is competitive in search results.

Low add-to-cart rate? Visitors are clicking but not adding — usually means the product page isn't convincing enough. Better photos, more detailed descriptions, social proof (reviews), or a lower price can help.

Low checkout rate? People want it but aren't buying — often a shipping cost issue. Free shipping thresholds, bundle discounts, or limited-time offers can push them over the edge.

What's a "Good" Conversion Rate?

It depends heavily on your product category. Fashion tends to have higher CTR but lower checkout rates (lots of browsing). Consumables and household items have moderate CTR but higher checkout rates (buyers know what they want). The benchmarks above are general guidelines — use them as a starting point and track your own trends over time.
